The operational context

Design data has to move quickly, but Eaton still needs to know what happened after it was sent.

For a global automotive organisation, the challenge is not simply transferring a file. It is giving the right people an efficient route to send it, confirming that the intended supplier received it and retaining a record that can be reviewed later.

Customer perspective MX gives Eaton a controlled route for external data exchange without placing every transaction back through the CAD department.

01Safe and secure file transfer

When Eaton sends files to its own suppliers, it uses MX to make the transfer and audit the movement of data in and out of the company. “We need to know that suppliers have definitely received data and MX enables us to track this,” says Ian Blundell.

Because there is no software to install or manage and no formal training requirement, Eaton can quickly set up programme engineers as MX users. Those engineers can then take responsibility for checking that the data they send has been downloaded, without routing every exchange through the CAD department. This saves CAD engineering time and allows specialists to focus on their own work.

02A global view of every exchange

As system administrator, Ian Blundell can see the information sent and received through the platform. If a member of the team is away, he can monitor the relevant notifications, while automated messages highlight data that has not been downloaded.

The permanent record helps Eaton answer a practical question that previously required manual chasing: did the supplier receive and download the data? For organisations managing similar external relationships, this is the difference between merely sending a file and using a controlled B2B exchange process with evidence behind it.

MX makes life much easier. With a range of toolmakers in China and sometimes language difficulties, it can be an obstacle given very tight turnaround times. We might, for example, have just 16 weeks for a large tool, with two of those weeks taken up by transportation.

Eaton's relationship with Majenta began when it needed support for a Ford contract under the C3P CAD, CAM, CAE and PIM programme. The requirement extended beyond transferring files into understanding and meeting the customer's technical data expectations.

As a Certified Data Services Provider, Majenta gives Eaton access to specialist experience through the MX+ services portal. The work can include data translation, quality checking, CAD re-mastering and data migration to support the integration of engineering data into the Ford C3PNG environment.

That specialist layer also helps Eaton address legacy CAD issues, request required information from internal systems and submit design files for approval, translation and release. The file exchange remains part of the same broader relationship, while the technical team provides the knowledge needed to make the data usable in the customer's environment.
